This 28-hour externship is being held September 7–10, 2010 in Pasadena, CA. We will meet daily, Tuesday through Friday. Morning sessions (8:30-12:15) will focus on a review of the theory and practice of EFT. Following a lunch break, afternoon sessions (1:30 to 4:30 PM) will focus on application, demonstration, and practical exercises. Participants are on their own for lunch and may choose from a number of restaurants that are conveniently located near the training site. This externship is offered in conjunction with Dr. Susan Johnson and the Ottawa Couple and Family Institute, Ottawa, Canada. This externship fulfills the initial externship requirement for certification in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).
The externship is hosted by Fuller Graduate School of Psychology and will be held at 180 North Oakland, Pasadena. Sessions will be held in SOP room 130.

Fuller is located in the heart of downtown Pasadena. Pasadena is just 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley. Our externship location is convenient to Historic Old Town Pasadena and the Paseo Colorado known as a thriving center for entertainment including: great restaurants featuring diverse cuisine, shopping, and street life. Pasadena is known for the Rose Bowl and Tournament of Roses but is also a center of the arts and culture including The Huntington Library, Norton Simon Museum, and the Gamble House.
Externship Details
The 28-hour externship includes:
- Observation of live sessions (if at all possible)
- Observation of EFT taped sessions
- Presentations of theory and clinical techniques
- Skill training exercises
- Supervision in specific cases
Presenters
Dr. Alison Lee, a Registered Psychologist, is founding member and Vice President of the Ottawa Couple Family Institute. She has expertise in helping individuals, couples and adult families presenting with a number of different problems including relationship difficulties, depression, anxiety, trauma, self esteem issues and coping with medical illness.
Alison is a certified EFT Therapist, Supervisor, and Trainer. She has supervised numerous therapists seeking EFT certification and co-developed the popular Advanced Core Skills EFT training program. She is a co-author of numerous articles on EFT and the Becoming an EFT Therapist: The Workbook.
Dr. James Furrow is the Evelyn and Frank Freed associate professor of marital and family therapy and Department Chair of Marriage and Family, Graduate School of Psychology, Fuller Seminary in Pasadena California. With a background in marriage and family therapy, Jim's clinical and research interests focus on couples therapy and positive youth development. He is a certified EFT Therapist, Supervisor, and Trainer.
Along with colleague Dr. Brent Bradley, Jim has published original research on the clinical practice of EFT. He was a contributing author of the Becoming an EFT Therapist: The Workbook and is co-editor of the forthcoming EFT Casebook. He is a clinical member and an approved supervisor of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, a member of the National Council on Family Relations, and a Certified Family Life Educator. Brent and Jim created the EFTZONE to offer EFT trainings for therapists seeking an engaging, entertaining, and experiential approach to learning EFT.
Who should attend?
The externship is recommended to all professionals who counsel couples, including psychiatrists, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, counselors, family physicians, social workers, psychiatric nurses, pastors and clergy, and students training in these professions.
Prerequisites:
- You must have completed a graduate degree in a counseling-related field, or be enrolled in one currently.
- Prior to attending the externship you must have read "Creating Connection" by Susan Johnson - 2004 edition.
EFT Participants learn to:
- See marital distress from an attachment perspective
- Help partners reprocess emotional responses that maintain distress
- Shape new interactions and bonding events
- Overcome therapeutic impasses
Cost:
- Early Registration (received before August 23, 2010): $825
- Registration (August 23 and later): $925
- Student Registration (limited number available): $600
- 28 CEs: $30 (optional) ; available for Psychologists, LMFTs, LMHCs, LPCs, and LCSWs. No partial credit will be awarded.
Cancellation and Refunds:
Requests must be received in email form sent to
info@theeftzone.com. All cancellation and refund requests received after August 25, 2010 will be charged a $200 late refund fee. No refunds given after September 1, 2010.
